San Carlos District Office
Remodel & Addition

Location: San Carlos, AZ
Owner: San Carlos USD
Size: 12,114 SF
The 12,114 SF 1890s San Carlos Day School Building was constructed by the BIA in San Carlos on the Apache Indian Reservation. The old tufa stone building had many problems from years of neglect – settlement, rotting timber, weak trusses, etc. The building was gutted, remodeled and re-Purposed into a new District Administration Building.

Special attention was paid to recreating the tufa stone that was characteristic to the building. By bringing in a qualified artist to create new stone molds matching the existing quarried stone, SPS+ Architects was able to provide an impeccable match to the existing stone in both size and texture. Rigorous ASTM testing was required to be completed on the one-of-a-kind new stone for code compliance. Once the new stone was laid, the artist then applied a permanent patina to match the existing tufa stone. The results are stunning and well beyond everyone’s expectations.
