Bylas Retail Center
Location: San Carlos Apache Reservation, AZ
Owner: San Carlos Apache Tribe
Size: 9,300 SF
This new business center for the community of San Carlos was created with a cultural sensitivity for this Native American community. The complex includes spaces for new retail shops as well as a space for an outdoor arts and crafts market. The complex also provides an amphitheater in the center and a surrounding garden.
The Bylas Small Business Incubator accommodates a variety of local Apache businesses in a dynamic and inviting setting reminiscent of an Apache village. Tenant suites range greatly in size to accommodate a wide variety of business types, and the front plaza features vendor stalls for Native food vendors We partially finished all tenant suites with flooring, ceilings and paint to encourage small business investment by lowering startup/move-in costs.
The front plaza houses an amphitheater, vendor stalls, native vegetation and trellises to host local performances, fairs and events as well as strong Native design elements, creating the look and feel of a traditional Apache village and celebrating the region’s Native American culture.
For this EDA funded project, the tribe hired an incubator manager to bring in local Apache businesspeople, artists and craftsmen and coach them to grow into sustainable, self-sufficient local businesses.
