Gila River WIC Center Renovation
Location: Sacaton, AZ
Owner: Gila River Indian Community
Size: 3,600 SF
The Gila River Indian Community commissioned ID Studio/SPS+ Architects to improve and design an addition to the existing Gila River WIC Building. The project called for an improvement in natural lighting as well as fixing the circulation problem in the interior of the building. The owner also wanted to improve the exterior of the building and create a new lobby area, while also adding insulation to the structure which was non-existent.
The response from the ID Studio/SPS+ Architects team was to create a new lobby area with clerestory windows to bring in light to the space, and also to make it more visible from the interior, as a way of way-finding in the building. We also added skylights at the hallway locations to improve the natural light.
We proposed an improved facade that would be clearer to the passerby and would invite the users to come into the lobby.
