Palo Verde Transportation Facility
Location: Palo Verde, AZ
Owner: Palo Verde Elementary School District
Size: 3,856 SF

Palo Verde School District had gone years maintaining their buses on a concrete slab with a temporary construction trailer and a few Conex containers; this project was long overdue. With an extremely limited budget, the scope included:
  • Bus bays: The new building, consisting of a two bay bus barn and a third open bay for bus washing, was located on a tight site with the intent of expanding in the future as needed. The building was located in the far Northwest corner of the site and the building was constructed so that in the future, if the property on the west was acquired, roll up doors could be added and the buses could drive through. The building was also constructed to be able to add future bays to the south as needed. We were able to re-align the bus entry so there was an entry lane and an exit lane which made it possible for the existing fueling station to remain. We provided asphalt in all high impact areas and compacted ABC in low impact and parking areas. Skylights and coiling door slat lights were included to maximize daylight. Minimal heating and cooling was provided, but the infrastructure was put in place to add as needed in the future.
  • Paving Improvements: Paving existing ABC fire lanes through campus.
  • Athletic facilities: Two new basketball courts at the north portion of the site.
When the project started, we found that there were outstanding permits and that the county was going to hold any new development until these were resolved. We worked tirelessly with the district and the county to resolve all items including this project when completed to ensure a clear pathway for future work.
